On January 3, 2002, the FAA Hughes Technical Center in Pomona, N.J. awarded the Weather Radar Research contract for systems design, development and integration services to BCI.
BCI will assist the FAA Weather Branch with Radar System Engineering tasks on a future Phased Array Radar (PAR) for severe weather surveillance. The FAA is a partner in a research consortium involving the National Severe Storms Laboratory, the Navy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Weather Service, the State of Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma to design, operate and test multi-function radar technology for applications combining weather detection and warning and airspace management. Lockheed Martin, also in Moorestown, is a teammate with BCI on the project.
BCI's John Heimmer, Vice President of Business Development, said "the phased array radar research project is important to the FAA because the future radars will scan faster and be more accurate than conventional radars, and simultaneously track aircraft and severe weather along their flight path for improved safety"
